The M1931 B-4 Howitzer, nicknamed âStalinâs Sledgehammerâ, was one of the most powerful artillery pieces of WWII. With its massive 203mm calibre, it could hurl 100kg shells up to 18km, mounted on a distinctive tracked carriage that spread the weight and absorbed the enormous recoil. First used in the Soviet-Finnish War (1939â40), it later became infamous for smashing German fortifications on the Eastern Front, where captured examples were also pressed into service by the Wehrmacht.
