Details The GE ES44AC is a highly successful diesel-electric freight locomotive built by GE Transportation (now part of Wabtec) and one of the flagship models of the Evolution Series introduced in the early 2000s. Developed as the successor to the popular AC4400CW, this locomotive was designed to meet modern emissions standards while delivering high reliability, fuel efficiency and versatile heavy-haul performance. It has become one of the most widely used freight locomotives across North America’s railroads. Powered by a GEVO-12 V12 diesel engine producing around 4,400 hp, the ES44AC uses AC traction motors and a Co-Co wheel arrangement that provides strong tractive effort and smooth operation across varied freight duties. Its large air-to-air heat exchanger and radiator arrangement are distinctive spotting features linked to its GEVO powerplant design. Since its introduction in 2003, the ES44AC has been ordered by virtually every major Class I railroad in the United States and Canada, including Union Pacific, BNSF Railway, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National and CPKC Railway. Many units remain in active service hauling intermodal, merchandise and unit freight trains.
