First issued in July 1940, the 5cm Pak 38 was developed as the successor to the 3.7cm Pak 36. Featuring a muzzle brake, aluminium alloy trail legs, and a double-layer 4mm armour shield, it could penetrate 61mm of 60-degree armour at 500 metres using Panzergranate 39 shells. The Pak 38 was first deployed in the Balkans in 1941 and went on to serve on the Eastern Front, in North Africa, and other theatres, with 9,600 units produced by 1943.
