For branch line operations, Adtranz (later Stadler Rail) developed a four-axle regional railcar with a diesel engine, marketed as the "Regio Shuttle" or RS1. This versatile vehicle concept was quickly embraced by private railways for its efficiency and adaptability.

By 2013, nearly 500 Regio Shuttles had been produced.
