Details
To meet the growing demands of passenger and express train services, the Prussian State Railways developed the Class P8 passenger locomotive. Over 3,700 of these versatile, three-coupled steam locomotives were built by German manufacturers up to 1923. Later designated Class 38 10–40, the locomotive delivered 880 kW, weighed approximately 130 tonnes including a fully supplied tender, and could reach speeds of 100 km/h forward and 50 km/h in reverse. The repainting of the DRG's extensive locomotive fleet to the standard black and red colour scheme took many years. Until around 1930, numerous locomotives continued to operate in the earlier olive green, reddish-brown, and black scheme used until 1926, albeit with updated numbering and markings, reflecting the transitional period in German steam traction.
