Details
With the launch of the summer timetable in 1991, Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway) officially opened the Mannheim–Stuttgart high-speed line. Alongside the new ICE services, the route was also used by the newly established InterRegio lines 26 (Saarbrücken–Lindau) and 27 (Karlsruhe–Nuremberg). The coaches on these services, as well as those on line 28 (Karlsruhe–Stuttgart), were fitted with vacuum toilets featuring distinctive silver-coloured water inlet nozzles, clearly visible on the exterior of the vehicles and faithfully reproduced on the model.
Because these InterRegio routes involved frequent direction changes at Stuttgart, Munich, and Friedrichshafen, control cars were introduced from 1995 onwards to streamline operations and reduce turnaround times.
One notable long-distance service was the IR 461 from Trier to Innsbruck, which travelled a substantial section of its route through Austria after departing Lindau. During this period, traction was provided by the Austrian Class 1044 locomotives, which hauled the train over the iconic Arlberg line until the service was discontinued in June 2001.
