Deutsche Bahn AG has been using the "Velaro D" vehicle family from Siemens as the 407 series since 2013. After some initial difficulties, the trains have now proven themselves to be highly reliable.
In 2019, Deutsche Bahn AG signed a supply contract for the delivery of up to 90 multiple units, which will enable traffic to the Netherlands and Belgium in addition to use in Germany. Based on the successful Velaro platform, the first so-called Velaro MS and ICE 3neo rolled onto the rails on time from December 2022. A total of 90 trains, each made up of 8-car units, will have been delivered by 2028. The trains are produced at the Siemens plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen. The design is based heavily on the previous 407 series, but has been slightly modified visually. The roof areas and installed safety systems in particular differ greatly here.
By the end of 2024, the 408s will gradually replace the 406 series, which previously ensured traffic to Belgium and the Netherlands for the DB Group. The series has now become indispensable, especially in the long-distance network within Germany. With its top speed of 300 km/h, the ICE 3neo makes a major contribution to ensuring the so-called Deutschland Takt.
