Details
After the Ae 4/4 locomotives of the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway, introduced in 1944, proved their reliability over two decades, the early 1960s highlighted the need to replace older mainline locomotives. While the SBB chose to procure Re 4/4 II locomotives with classic direct control and single-phase AC motors, the BLS opted for more advanced technology featuring silicon rectifiers and shaft current motors. Initially classified as Ae 4/4 II and later reclassified as Re 4/4 following technical upgrades, these locomotives were built by SLM and BBC. They were employed for both passenger and freight services across the BLS, GBS, SEZ, and BN networks, as well as on connecting SBB lines, making them a versatile and historically significant class for Swiss rail operations.
