This compact two-axle locomotive was developed to replace older shunting engines and handle trip work on minor lines, offering reliable performance with a Voith hydraulic transmission and an original Poyaud diesel engine that was later replaced in many units with lower-emission RVI engines in the late 1990s. The Y 8000 has a maximum speed of about 60 km/h and a short wheelbase that makes it ideal for shunting yards, freight terminals, and branch-line operations, and some examples have even been certified for use in Italy with SNCF subsidiary CapTrain Italia.
