Details The DB Class 120 refers to the locomotives of the Soviet M62 diesel-electric series that were operated by the Deutsche Reichsbahn in East Germany. Originally imported from the Luhansk Locomotive Factory (LTS) in the Soviet Union between 1966 and 1978, these powerful six-axle Co-Co diesel locomotives were first classified as V 200 before being reclassified as Class 120 on the East German roster. A total of nearly 400 units were delivered, where they became hard-working freight locomotives on non-electrified routes. After German reunification, the remaining engines were renumbered BR 220 under the unified Deutsche Bahn AG because the original Class 120 designation was already in use for electric locomotives and numbers in the 100–199 range were reserved for electrics. These diesel M62-derived locomotives were gradually phased out of service, with most withdrawn by the mid-1990s. Many of their robust Soviet-built sisters continued service in other countries, and a few examples are preserved today.
