Details
The CSD Class T 478.4 is a classic diesel-electric locomotive developed for the Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD) in the late 1970s and later operated by CeskĆ© drĆ”hy (CD) in the Czech Republic and ŽeleznicnĆ” spolocnost Slovensko (ŽSR / ZSSK) in Slovakia as Class 754. Designed as an enhanced version of the earlier T 478.3 series, the T 478.4 introduced an electric train heating generator in place of steam heating and featured a more powerful engine with modernised electrical equipment. A total of 86 locomotives were built between 1978 and 1980 by CKD Praha, and their distinctive dual-cab front earned them the popular nickname āBrejlovecā (Goggles) among railway enthusiasts.
With a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, a power output of approximately 1,472 kW, and a maximum speed of 100 km/h (62 mph), the T 478.4, later Class 754, was widely used on heavy passenger and freight trains across standard-gauge routes in Czechoslovakia and its successor states. As railway electrification expanded, many locomotives continued in service with CD and ŽSR, while others were leased to operators abroad, including PKP Intercity in Poland.
