Details
The Gölsdorf Adriatic Class 310 was one of the most elegant and powerful express steam locomotives designed for the Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways (kkStB) in the early 20th century. Designed by celebrated Austrian locomotive engineer Karl Gölsdorf, the Class 310 was a fully superheated development of earlier Adriatic types and was built between 1911 and 1918 to haul premier passenger trains, including high-speed expresses across the Austrian network. With a distinctive 2-6-4 (Adriatic) wheel arrangement, four-cylinder compound steam engine and exceptionally large driving wheels, the 310s were capable of sustained high-speed running and were among the most advanced European locomotives of their era.
Deployed on important mainline services such as the Franz-Josefs-Bahn and the Northern Railway, Class 310 locomotives represented the pinnacle of Austro-Hungarian steam passenger power before World War I and remained in service through the interwar period. After the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1919, many continued to serve with successor railways under new classifications, while captured examples were later operated by the German Reichsbahn as BR 16.001â056 during World War II. Although all original examples were eventually retired, two members of the class survive today, with 310.23 preserved and operational at the Strasshof Railway Museum in Austria. For model railway enthusiasts, the Gölsdorf Class 310 remains an iconic prototype for HO and era I layouts, offering both historical significance and striking visual appeal on express passenger and heritage scenes.
