Details
The Saxon XII H2 was a distinguished class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives built for the Royal Saxon State Railways (Königlich SĂ€chsische Staatseisenbahnen) between 1910 and 1927 to handle passenger services across the hilly terrain of Saxony. Known for its excellent running qualities, the class quickly earned the affectionate nickname âSĂ€chsischer Rollwagenâ (Saxon rollers) thanks to its smooth performance on winding gradients. A total of 169 locomotives were constructed by the SĂ€chsische Maschinenfabrik in Chemnitz, making the XII H2 one of the most successful Saxon passenger designs of the early 20th century.
After World War I, many of these engines were incorporated into the newly formed Deutsche Reichsbahn fleet as DRG Class 38.2-3, numbered from 38 201 to 38 334, with ten additional units built in 1927. During and after World War II, some locomotives returned from foreign service, but the class gradually declined as newer motive power emerged. The last of the XII H2 locomotives were withdrawn by 1971, with 38 205 preserved today by the DB Museum in Nuremberg and on display at the Saxon Railway Museum in Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf, making it a prized prototype for historical HO scale and steam era layouts.
