The name Pendolino comes from the Italian word for “little pendulum,” referring to how the cars tilt as the train goes around bends. The tilting system can increase cornering speed by up to about 30–35 percent compared with non-tilting trains by compensating for centrifugal forces on passengers. Pendolino technology was developed by Fiat Ferroviaria and later produced by Alstom after it acquired Fiat Ferroviaria in 2000.
