The FS Class E.656 is a class of Italian electric locomotives built for Ferrovie dello Stato (FS)/Trenitalia between 1975 and 1989. A total of 461 locomotives were produced to provide powerful, mixed-traffic performance across Italy’s 3 kV DC electrified network, handling everything from freight trains to intercity passenger services. The E.656 was developed from earlier FS types and became one of Italy’s most versatile mainline electrics.
With a Bo'Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and a continuous power output of around 4200 kW, the class can reach up to 150 km/h, making it suitable for both heavy freight and faster passenger work. Its articulated design and strong traction earned it the nickname “Caimano” (Caiman) from railfans.
Many E.656s later moved into the cargo division for dedicated freight duties and were reclassified as Class E.655 when gear ratios and speed limits were adjusted for heavy freight work.
