In the late 1950s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn urgently required replacements for the ageing class 80 steam locomotives. While the V 60 was still undergoing testing in the GDR, 20 units of the well-established T 435.0 series were procured from Czechoslovakia. These locomotives, designated as the V 75, were primarily deployed for shunting operations in and around Leipzig.
