Details
At the end of the 1980s, PKP required a new locomotive series capable of continuous operation at 160 km/h to support fast passenger services between Warsaw and Krakow. The EP05 locomotives, converted from the EU05 starting in 1973, were limited in number and ageing. Consequently, Pafawag designed the 104E locomotive type in Wroclaw. These locomotives exceeded expectations, leading PKP to acquire a further 45 units by 1997. The EP09 series was widely used and nearly completely replaced the EP05 across the network.
