The robust S499.02 locomotives were developed in the mid-1970s as an advancement of the S499.0 class. Featuring a distinctive wide fan belt along the sides for transformer cooling instead of large windows, their body design closely resembled the E 469.3 direct current locomotives. Between 1975 and 1981, 86 units entered service with CSD, operating in both freight and passenger train roles. During the 1980s, some were upgraded with modern single-arm pantographs and were redesignated as class 242 in 1988.
