Details
The PKP Class EP09 is a Polish electric locomotive designed specifically for fast passenger service on the 3 kV DC electrified network. Developed in the 1980s, it was introduced to modernise and replace older passenger engines, bringing improved speed and comfort to intercity travel across Poland.
Constructed between 1986 and 1997, a total of 62 locomotives were built in multiple series. From new they featured a sleek cab design and strong electrical systems, enabling them to haul even long, heavy passenger trains with confidence. The EP09’s Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, combined with powerful traction motors, allowed it to achieve a maximum speed of 160 km/h, making it one of the fastest Polish electric locomotives of its era.
During their career, EP09 locomotives were used extensively on premier long-distance services, including TLK and InterCity trains, linking Warsaw with major cities such as Kraków, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan. The class was typically seen in Polish passenger colours and later variations received updated liveries reflecting evolving corporate identity.
Despite newer multiple-units and modern locomotives entering service, many EP09s remain in active duty with PKP Intercity, a testament to the class’s durability and continued relevance. For model railway enthusiasts, the PKP Class EP09 is a rewarding prototype for Era IV–V Polish passenger layouts, offering high-speed capability and authentic modern mainline operation that enhances any Eastern European electrified layout.
