Details
The SNCF Class BB 60000 is a class of diesel-electric locomotives operated by SNCF Fret and SNCF Infra for shunting duties and light freight work on non-electrified lines in France. These four-axle Bo'Bo' locomotives were built at the Vossloh España works in Valencia and first entered service in 2006 in response to an ageing diesel fleet that had become expensive to maintain and fuel.
Powered by a Caterpillar CAT3508B diesel engine with diesel-electric transmission, the BB 60000 produces about 1 000 kW and can reach a top speed of 100 km/h, making it suitable for yard shunting, trip workings and local freight transfers. Built to replace older medium-power diesels such as the BB 63400 / BB 63500, the BB 60000 combines modern emissions and control technologies with robust performance.
The first 160 locomotives were ordered in the mid-2000s, and later units were added for infrastructure duties, where they carry yellow-grey livery distinct from freight-painted examples. Allocated mainly to the Sotteville depot, these locomotives operate across France, performing heavy shunting and local freight tasks.
