Details
The PKP Class ET22 is one of Polandās most iconic electric locomotives and among the most numerous standard-gauge electrics ever built in Europe. Manufactured by Pafawag from 1969 to 1989, this six-axle Co'Co' locomotive carries the factory designation 201E and was delivered in large numbers to Polskie Koleje Panstwowe (PKP) for heavy freight duties.
With over 1,180 locomotives produced, the ET22 became the backbone of Polish freight operations under 3 kV DC overhead lines. Its robust design, 120-tonne weight and powerful 3 000 kW continuous output allowed it to haul heavy trains with ease ā moving freight of more than 3 000 tonnes at moderate speeds and still capable of 125 km/h when pressed into passenger service. Though designated primarily as a freight locomotive, its universal nature saw it deployed on slower passenger runs when needed.
The ET22ās distinctive long body and six-axle profile earned it the affectionate nickname āBykā (The Bull) among railfans. Early examples wore a two-tone green livery with grey roof, later featuring high-visibility yellow ends, and many survive today in PKP Cargo colours or heritage schemes.
