Details
The MaK / Vossloh G1206 is a versatile and powerful diesel-hydraulic locomotive that has become one of the most successful types for shunting, trip freight and mainline freight duties across Europe. Developed by Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK) in the late 1980s, the design was later continued under Vossloh after the company acquired MaK’s locomotive business. Production ran from 1991 to 2010, with around 450 locomotives built for a wide range of operators in Germany and beyond.
The G1206 features a B'B' wheel arrangement and a reliable diesel engine paired with hydraulic transmission, delivering strong tractive effort and excellent low-speed control for yard work as well as the power required for medium freight services. Its robust construction and excellent reliability have made it popular with national railways and private freight operators, including deployments in Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland and Scandinavia, as well as its home market in Germany.
Many G1206 locomotives work in mixed duties combining yard switching, trip work between terminals and even regional freight. Their distinctive cab-forward profile and functional bodywork make them instantly recognisable on European railways. Recent years have seen the type operated by leasing companies, increasing its visibility across different operators and liveries.
