Details
The Siemens Vectron DE is the diesel-powered version of the modern Vectron locomotive platform, designed for mainline operation on non-electrified track while retaining the modular flexibility of the wider Vectron family. It shares the same advanced modular engineering and cab layout as its electric siblings, but is fitted with a powerful diesel engine for routes without overhead wires. Siemens Mobility developed the Vectron DE to give operators a contemporary diesel alternative that still benefits from the Vectronās proven systems, train control architecture and interoperability.
Under the hood, the Vectron DE is powered by an MTU 16V 4000 R84 diesel engine producing around 2,700 kW, allowing it to haul both freight and passenger trains on unelectrified lines with a top speed of approximately 160 km/h, suitable for fast regional and mainline duties. The locomotive retains a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, giving balanced performance and good adhesion across standard gauge networks. The longer body compared with electric Vectrons accommodates the diesel powerplant and associated mechanical systems.
In Germany the Vectron DE is generally designated Class 247 and is aimed at operators needing modern diesel traction that can integrate with their Vectron electric fleets. For model railway enthusiasts, the Vectron DE makes an excellent Era VI diesel prototype, especially on non-electrified mainlines and mixed freight or passenger layouts where authentic modern traction brings your European scenes right up to the present day.
