The internal Siemens designation “ES 64” refers to the EuroSprinter platform with a 6,400 kW power rating, while the suffix “U” signifies a universal, multi-purpose electric capable of high-speed passenger and freight duties. Originally designed to operate on 15 kV AC electrification, the ES 64 U locomotives feature a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and quill drives to reduce track forces, making them ideal for high-speed service. In Austria, ÖBB adopted the class as Class 1016, affectionately known as the “Taurus”, a brand name later extended to related ES 64 U variants including Class 1116 and Class 1216.
