Designed and built in Poland by Fablok and Zastal between 1976 and 1981, the SM31 was intended to replace older shunting types and handle the intensive demands of large-scale freight handling. Featuring a Co'Co' wheel arrangement, the SM31 delivers strong tractive effort and stability at low speeds, ideal for manoeuvring heavy consists and working long unit trains in yards, industrial sidings and transfer runs. Its diesel-electric transmission offers smooth control and reliability, making it suitable for continuous shunting cycles and heavy transfer work between yards and marshalling facilities. Over its service life, the SM31 was widely deployed across Poland’s electrified and non-electrified freight hubs. While primarily a yard locomotive, its power and flexibility also enabled use on short freight transfers and secondary movements without the need for additional locomotives.
