Designed as part of the broader V 100 family, it provided a modern, reliable solution for mixed-traffic duties on non-electrified main and secondary lines, replacing older steam locomotives and enhancing operational flexibility. Featuring a B'B' wheel arrangement and a hydraulic transmission paired with a capable diesel engine, the V 100.10 offered a balance of good acceleration, smooth control and efficient power. Its design allowed it to work both regional passenger trains and freight services, making it a workhorse for everyday operations across West Germany. In 1968, under Deutsche Bundesbahn’s modern classification system, the V 100.10 became known as Class 211. Class 211 locomotives were widely deployed on branch lines, regional expresses and local freight workings, proving especially valuable where electrification did not reach. Their moderate top speed and dependable performance made them versatile performers throughout the 1970s and 1980s. As modern traction arrived, many were retired from mainline service, but several found second careers with private operators and on industrial railways.
