Details
The Siemens Desiro is a widely used family of multiple unit trains designed by Siemens Mobility for regional, commuter and light intercity service across Europe and beyond. Introduced in the late 1990s, the Desiro range has become one of the most successful modular train platforms in modern rail transport, offering both diesel (DMU) and electric (EMU) variants to suit a variety of electrification systems and service patterns.
Desiro units are noted for their modular design, which allows operators to choose configurations with different car counts, power types, interior layouts and performance specifications. This flexibility has made the family popular with national and regional railways in countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, and Malaysia. Variants include the six-car Desiro ML for suburban and regional metro-style operations, two- to four-car regional sets, and hybrid configurations configured for cross-border work.
Key features of the Desiro platform include good acceleration, passenger comfort, low-floor accessibility in many versions, and modern onboard systems for information and safety. Many units operate at speeds up to around 160 km/h, making them suitable for busy commuter corridors as well as longer regional journeys.
