Features: DCC Sound Model Best suited to Epoch III Model Railways This model mainly operates in Germany This model is decorated in DB company markings This model is best suited to 358mm radius curves Details The Bavarian EP 5 was an early German electric express locomotive built for the Royal Bavarian State Railways (Königlich Bayerische Staatsbahn) and later operated by the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft. Conceived in the late 1920s, the EP 5 was designed to haul heavy passenger trains on newly electrified main lines in southern Germany, particularly over demanding routes where steam traction was less efficient. Only four examples were constructed, numbered EP 5 01–04, with delivery completed in 1928. These locomotives featured a 1'E1' wheel arrangement, combining powered driving axles with leading and trailing pony trucks for stability at speed and strong adhesion on gradients. Their elegant yet robust design reflected cutting-edge engineering of the era, with performance tailored to the heavy expresses of the Bavarian network. After the formation of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the class was renumbered and continued in service through the 1930s and 1940s, handling principal passenger trains with distinction. In post-war Germany, the surviving locomotives were operated by the Deutsche Bundesbahn before being retired in the 1950s as newer electric classes took over.
