Developed by Deutsche Bundesbahn in the 1960s, the Class 103 was designed to haul the fastest and heaviest InterCity trains on Germany’s expanding electrified main lines. Its sleek, powerful design quickly made it a symbol of modern high-speed rail. Built between 1965 and 1976, a total of 145 locomotives were produced. With a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, advanced three-phase electrical systems and a continuous power output of around 7,440 kW, the Class 103 was engineered for sustained high-speed service. It could reach 200 km/h in regular service and was one of the world’s first standardised electric locomotives capable of such performance. Class 103 locomotives wore distinctive orient-rot livery and later verkehrsrot, becoming a familiar sight at the head of prestigious InterCity and Trans Europ Express (TEE) services throughout the 1970s and 1980s. They set new standards in acceleration and reliability, drastically reducing travel times between major German cities.
