Details
The PKP Class EN57 is the most numerous and iconic electric multiple unit (EMU) ever operated by Polskie Koleje Panstwowe (PKP), and a cornerstone of Polish regional and suburban rail transport. Introduced in 1962, the EN57 was developed to serve a rapidly expanding electrified network under 3 kV DC overhead lines, providing reliable, high-capacity passenger service on both commuter and regional routes.
Built in large numbers over many years, the EN57 features a three-car configuration with a motor coach at each end and a trailer in the middle. Its design emphasises simple, robust construction and ease of operation, making it well suited to the frequent stopping patterns and varied services of Polandās mainline electrified corridors. The units were widely deployed on routes radiating from major cities such as Warsaw, Kraków, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan, where they became the backbone of local and regional passenger operations.
Over time, many EN57s received mid-life modernisations to improve performance, comfort and accessibility, resulting in updated interiors, new cab equipment and revised exteriors in modern corporate liveries. Despite the arrival of newer EMUs, EN57s continued to serve well into the 21st century, a testament to their durability and practical design.
