Designed to provide reliable power for shunting duties, branch-line passenger services and light freight work, the T 9 class became one of the most widely recognised steam types of its era. Built in several sub-classes, the T 9 series included variants such as the T 9.1, T 9.2 and T 9.3, each adapted to specific duties. These locomotives typically featured a 0-6-0T wheel arrangement (three coupled driving axles with no leading or trailing wheels) that gave strong traction at low speeds and a compact footprint suited to tight yard work and regional sidings. The tank-engine design carried water and fuel onboard, making the T 9 agile and self-contained without the need for a separate tender. The class saw widespread use on lightly trafficked branch lines, local passenger trains and goods services, where its simplicity and reliability were major assets. After the formation of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, many T 9 locomotives were renumbered and continued to provide valuable service into the mid-20th century, often in secondary roles or as yard pilots.
