Details
The DR Class E 42 was a versatile electric locomotive built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn of East Germany to serve freight and slower passenger duties across the growing electrified network. Built by LEW Hennigsdorf between 1963 and 1976, a total of 292 locomotives entered service, making it one of the most numerous post-war East German electrics.
Featuring a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, the E 42 delivered around 2,920 kW of power with a maximum speed of 100 km/h, making it well suited to heavy freight trains and secondary passenger work rather than high-speed expresses. Its design was derived from the same basic platform as the DR’s express locomotive but geared differently to prioritise tractive effort and reliability for freight duties.
From 1970 onwards, the class was redesignated Class 242, and after German reunification many locomotives passed to Deutsche Bahn AG, where they became Class 142. A number continued in commercial service into the early 21st century, and several were hired or sold to private operators and worked in Switzerland under designations such as Ae 417, Ae 476 and Ae 477.
