NS 2400 Diesel Locomotive III (DCC-Sound) 1:160 scale model produced by Piko. This model is ready-to-run straight out of the box and would make a excellent addition to any model railway collection. Features: DCC Sound Model Best suited to Epoch III Model Railways This model mainly operates in Netherlands This model is decorated in NS company markings This model is best suited to 192mm radius curves Details The NS Class 2400 was a series of diesel-electric locomotives operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) between 1954 and 1991. Built by Alsthom in France, the class ultimately numbered 130 examples and was ordered as part of NS’s post-war plan to replace ageing steam locomotives and maintain services on lines that were not yet electrified. The locomotives featured a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and were powered by diesel engines producing around 850 hp, giving them a top speed of about 80 km/h, ideal for freight duties and occasional passenger services early in their careers. A small number were briefly fitted with more powerful engines but were later standardised. Early Class 2400s were delivered in blue livery with grey bogies and red buffer beams, while later units appeared in brown and ultimately the NS yellow-grey ā€œhome styleā€ introduced in the 1970s. The class worked mainly goods trains, light freight and shunting throughout the 1950s to 1980s as electrification spread across the Dutch network. Withdrawals began in the 1970s, with the last locomotives taken out of service by 1991. Many were sold to France’s SNCF for works train duties, and a number have been preserved in Dutch heritage service, with examples in original and yellow-grey liveries.
