Details
The Stadler GTW (from the German Gelenktriebwagen, meaning articulated railcar) is a family of lightweight multiple units built by Stadler Rail of Switzerland for regional and suburban passenger transport. First introduced in 1995, the GTW became one of Stadlerās earliest successful modular rail designs and has been widely adopted across Europe and beyond.
GTW units are characterised by a central power module (also known as a drive container or powerpack) positioned between lightweight passenger sections. This central module contains the traction equipment, while the end sections provide a low-floor passenger area that supports efficient boarding and accessibility. The modular design allows variants with different car lengths and power systems, including diesel-electric and electric versions, and use on metre, standard and Iberian gauges.
The basic configuration, such as the GTW 2/6, has one powered module and two passenger sections, while larger configurations like GTW 2/8, 4/8 and 4/12 extend capacity and performance. Maximum speeds range from about 115 to 140 km/h depending on variant and specification. GTW units operate in countries including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United States on commuter lines, regional networks and local services.
