Built in the 1930s, only two units were constructed, each intended for excursion and tourist services rather than conventional commuter work. With a distinctive rounded body and large window panels along the sides, the ET 91 offered an exceptional viewing experience for passengers on scenic routes, particularly in southern Germany near lakes, mountains and tourist destinations. Its streamlined appearance was stylish for the era and contrasted sharply with the more functional electric multiple units of the time. The railcar was powered from 15 kV AC overhead electrification, making it suitable for operation on electrified main and branch lines. After World War II, the surviving ET 91 continued in service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) and later with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (East Germany), carrying on its role as a special-purpose railcar into the 1950s and 1960s. Its continued use reflected its popularity with the public and railway enthusiasts alike.
