Hobby SNCB 7000 Steam Locomotive III (~AC-Sound) 1:87 scale model produced by Piko. Features: AC Sound Model Best suited to Epoch III Model Railways This model mainly operates in Belgium This model is decorated in SNCB company markings This model is best suited to 358mm radius curves Details The Prussian G 7.1 was one of the most numerous and influential steam freight locomotives of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, forming the backbone of heavy goods haulage across the Prussian state railways and later the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Designed in 1893, the class became a standard for mainline freight power with rugged construction and excellent hauling capability. Built over many years, thousands of G 7.1 locomotives were produced for Prussia and other German states; later, numerous units were inherited by the Reichsbahn and renumbered into its fleet as part of early standardisation. The locomotive’s 0-8-0 wheel arrangement with four coupled driving axles gave exceptional tractive effort for its day, making it ideal for heavy mineral trains, coal workings and slow goods services on main and secondary routes. The G 7.1’s simple yet robust design made it easy to maintain in depots and local workshops, contributing to its long service life. It operated reliably in mixed traffic environments, but its strength was always in freight haulage, where its power and adhesion were fully exploited. As newer freight locomotives and electrification expanded in the mid-20th century, the surviving G 7.1s were gradually retired. Some found second careers in industrial and works service, while a few examples have survived into preservation.
