Details
The DB Class V 90 is one of Germany’s most successful and enduring diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotives, designed for yard duties, transfer runs and light freight services on non-electrified lines. Introduced in 1960 for the Deutsche Bundesbahn, the V 90 filled the need for a modern, rugged locomotive capable of handling heavy shunting, main-line transfer work and flexible duties that older steam shunters could no longer perform efficiently.
Built in several batches through the 1960s and 1970s, the Class V 90 features a B'B' wheel arrangement and a powerful diesel-hydraulic transmission that delivers strong low-speed tractive effort and smooth control — ideal for shunting complex consists and moving freight wagons on gradients. The locomotive’s characteristic squared-off cab and bonnet design make it instantly recognisable on layouts depicting German depots, yards and secondary lines.
In the 1968 renumbering, the V 90 became Class 290 under the Deutsche Bundesbahn system, and later units were classed as Class 291 and 294 depending on modifications such as reinforced traction motors and hydraulic upgrades. Many V 90 locomotives remained in service through the 1980s and 1990s, moving freight, assisting depot operations, or leased to private operators after the formation of Deutsche Bahn AG.
