Details
The NS Class 600 was a class of diesel-electric shunting locomotives built for the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), introduced between 1950 and 1957 to support yard operations and light transfer duties on the Dutch railway network. Sixty-five locomotives were delivered in total, numbered 601ā665, and constructed in England by English Electric at the Dick, Kerr & Co. and Vulcan Foundry works. They were closely related to the British Class 11 shunter in design and performance, but adapted for Dutch requirements.
Powered by a 400 hp English Electric 6KT diesel engine and featuring a 0-6-0 wheel arrangement, the Class 600 offered strong low-speed tractive effort with a top speed of around 30 km/h, ideal for yard duties, assembling consists, and short transfers between electrified and non-electrified zones. The class earned affectionate nicknames such as āHippelā and āBakkieā from railworkers and enthusiasts.
In later years, a portion of the fleet was fitted with remote control equipment and renumbered into the 671ā693 series. Withdrawals from NS service took place in the early 2000s, but many locomotives have been preserved or found new life with industrial and private operators, including companies like Railpro and Rotterdam Rail Feeding.
