The Bombardier TRAXX locomotives are among the most successful and versatile electric and multi-system locomotives in Europe, forming a backbone of German rail operations. In 2013, DB AG and Bombardier signed a framework contract providing for the delivery of up to 450 additional TRAXX locomotives.
Under this contract, more than 100 locomotives of series 187 were delivered for DB Cargo, along with 20 TRAXX P160AC3 locomotives (series 147) for DB Regio. Since January 2017, series 147 locomotives have been operating with Bn coaches and double-deck trains, providing reliable regional passenger services.
Further locomotives are intended for InterCity (IC) and IC2 trains, painted in the white-red DB long-distance livery and designated as series 147.5. The passenger versions are notable for their distinctive front-mounted train destination indicators, making them immediately recognisable.
