Details
The DB Class E 10 was one of the most important electric locomotives in post-war West Germany, introduced in the 1950s as part of Deutsche Bundesbahnās Einheits-Elektrolokomotiven (āstandardised electric locomotivesā) programme. Designed for high-speed express passenger service, the Bo'Bo'-configured E 10 combined strong performance with reliability and versatility, helping modernise Germanyās electrified main lines.
Built between 1956 and 1969, a total of 416 locomotives emerged from major builders including Krupp, Henschel and Krauss-Maffei, with electrical equipment from Siemens, AEG and BBC. Early units carried the E 10 designation, but in 1968 the entire class was renumbered Class 110 under Deutsche Bundesbahnās new system, reflecting its role as the backbone of fast passenger operations.
Capable of 150 km/h and producing around 3,700 kW, the Class E 10 excelled on expresses and later regional trains. Some sub-series were adapted for even higher speeds and received separate designations such as Class 112, 113 and 114 as numbering systems evolved. Into the 1990s and 2000s, remaining locomotives were reassigned to commuter, regional and special-train duties, with some lasting in service with private operators after retirement from Deutsche Bahn.
