With a maximum speed of 150 km/h, it ranked among the fastest electric locomotives of its time. Its streamlined body, high-speed gearing and powerful traction motors made it ideal for long-distance express services, particularly in southern Germany. After the Second World War, surviving locomotives were divided between Deutsche Bundesbahn, Deutsche Reichsbahn (East Germany) and the Austrian Federal Railways. Under later renumbering systems, DB examples became Class 118, while Austrian locomotives were classified as ÖBB Class 1018. Modernisation programmes extended their working lives, with final withdrawals occurring in the 1980s.
