Details
The DRG Class E 18 was a high-speed electric locomotive developed for the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft to haul express passenger trains on Germany’s electrified main lines. Construction took place between 1935 and 1939, with two additional locomotives completed in 1954–1955, bringing total production to 63 units. The class was built by a consortium including AEG, Krupp and Lokomotivfabrik Floridsdorf.
The E 18 featured a 1'Do1' wheel arrangement and operated on 15 kV 16? Hz AC overhead supply. With a maximum speed of 150 km/h, it ranked among the fastest electric locomotives of its time. Its streamlined body, high-speed gearing and powerful traction motors made it ideal for long-distance express services, particularly in southern Germany.
After the Second World War, surviving locomotives were divided between Deutsche Bundesbahn, Deutsche Reichsbahn (East Germany) and the Austrian Federal Railways. Under later renumbering systems, DB examples became Class 118, while Austrian locomotives were classified as ÖBB Class 1018. Modernisation programmes extended their working lives, with final withdrawals occurring in the 1980s.
