Construction took place between 1935 and 1939, with two additional locomotives completed in 1954–1955, bringing total production to 63 units. The class was built by a consortium including AEG, Krupp and Lokomotivfabrik Floridsdorf. The E 18 featured a 1'Do1' wheel arrangement and operated on 15 kV 16? Hz AC overhead supply. With a maximum speed of 150 km/h, it ranked among the fastest electric locomotives of its time.
