Originally built by Škoda in 1961–1962 for heavy freight, the class became a mainstay of the 3 kV DC network, particularly for mineral trains, general freight, and banking duties. These locomotives retained the Co'Co' six-axle layout, six powerful traction motors, and welded steel bodies, providing high tractive effort and reliable operation. With a top speed of 90 km/h, they were designed for consistent freight performance rather than express passenger work. Many Rh 181s continued in secondary freight, shunting, and industrial service well into the 2000s.
