Details The DRG Class E 93 was a powerful six-axle electric freight locomotive developed in the 1930s for the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) to handle heavy freight trains on steep main-line gradients. It was conceived to meet the demanding requirements of newly electrified routes such as the Geislinger Steige on the Stuttgart–Ulm line, where strong traction was essential for moving long, heavy trains uphill. Eighteen locomotives were built between 1933 and 1937 by AEG and BBC, each featuring a Co'Co' wheel arrangement with all six axles individually driven. With a robust 15 kV AC electric system, continuous power output around 2,500 kW, and a top speed of about 70 km/h, the E 93 delivered exceptional pulling power and adhesion for its era, making it highly effective on heavy freight duties. Externally, the Class E 93’s long hoods and low-slung centre cab gave it a distinctive appearance that drew comparisons with Swiss ā€œcrocodileā€ locomotives, though the German design was rigid-framed rather than articulated. As electrification expanded, the E 93 worked freight services beyond the Geislinger Steige, including long freight routes across southern Germany. In 1968, surviving locomotives were reclassified as DB Class 193 under Deutsche Bundesbahn. They continued in service for decades before final retirements in the 1980s, earning a reputation for reliability and strength.
