Details The DB Class 101 is a high-performance three-phase electric locomotive built for Deutsche Bahn AG to modernise long-distance passenger services in Germany. Constructed by Adtranz between 1996 and 1999, a total of 145 locomotives were produced to replace the ageing Class 103 fleet and serve as the new flagship for InterCity and EuroCity trains on Germany’s electrified main lines. These locomotives feature a sleek, aerodynamic Bo'Bo' design and advanced traction electronics. Powered from 15 kV AC overhead lines, the Class 101 delivers 6,400 kW of power and is certified for a design speed of 220 km/h, although in regular service many operate at 200 km/h due to rolling stock and route limitations. Their speed, reliability and push-pull capability with driving trailers make them ideal for fast InterCity services, and they have been a common sight on German express trains since their introduction. Originally delivered in orient-rot livery, many Class 101 locomotives later received the Deutsche Bahn verkehrsrot colour scheme. As of 2025, the class is gradually being withdrawn and scrapped as new high-speed units and EMUs replace loco-hauled expresses.
