Details
āGoods belong on the railroad.ā This famous slogan by the German Federal Railroad (DB) reflected the importance of rail freight before the Second World War. Yet even then, powerful road trucks were capable of hauling heavy loads, and the DB recognised the cost-efficiency of adapting them for rail use.
Among these adaptations were trucks from VogtlƤndische Maschinenfabrik AG (VOMAG), one of Germanyās leading truck manufacturers. These distinctive ālong-nosedā rail trucks were modified with buffer beams and couplers at the front and rear, enabling light switching duties and construction work while retaining most of their original truck design. With only one reverse gear, they had a limited turning radius and often required a turntable to reverse direction. To increase operational flexibility, some units were coupled back-to-back.
Several VOMAG rail trucks were incorporated into the DB fleet, painted in striking red, and served regional construction and light switching operations around Hamburg until the early 1960s. For model railway enthusiasts, a VOMAG truck is a real eye-catcher, particularly when hauling a freight car, and offers a unique way to recreate historical construction and industrial operations on a layout.
