Details
The Siemens Vectron Dual Mode is a modern hybrid locomotive designed to operate both as an electric locomotive under overhead catenary and as a diesel locomotive on unelectrified track. It belongs to the Vectron family of locomotives developed by Siemens Mobility, sharing the same modular platform and cab design but with the flexibility to seamlessly switch between electric and diesel power.
Under electric operation, the Vectron Dual Mode draws power from overhead lines for zero-emission performance and lower energy costs. When leaving electrified territory, its onboard diesel engine provides independent traction without the need to change locomotives. This dual-mode capability makes it an excellent choice for freight and passenger services that cover both electrified mainlines and non-electrified branches, eliminating delays that would otherwise occur when swapping motive power.
The locomotive maintains a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, giving balanced performance, good adhesion and high reliability across varied services. It delivers strong tractive effort in both modes and a top speed suitable for high-quality freight or regional passenger operations, bringing modern versatility to mixed-network applications.
In Germany, the Vectron Dual Mode is generally designated Class 247 and is aimed at operators looking to integrate modern diesel and electric traction within a single fleet.
