Details
The Belgian Railways Class 18 (also known as HLE 18) is a series of modern multivoltage electric locomotives built by Siemens for the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB/NMBS). These locomotives are part of the Siemens EuroSprinter ES60U3 family, designed for high performance passenger service across Belgium and neighbouring countries.
Ordered in two batches, the first in 2006 and the second in 2008, 120 locomotives were built between 2009 and 2012. They were introduced to replace older SNCB passenger locomotives on InterCity and fast long distance trains and to strengthen the fleet for modern electrified operations. The locomotives are classified as HLE 18 (96 units) and HLE 19 (24 units fitted with automatic central couplers for fixed formation push pull service).
Configured with a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, the Class 18 operates under multivoltage systems including 1.5 kV DC, 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC, making it ideal for international services and versatile deployment. With a top speed of 200 km/h and a power output suited to high speed services, the Class 18 delivers strong performance on electrified mainlines, handling both long distance expresses and regional trains with ease.
