Details
The FS Class E.464 is a class of electric locomotives built for Italy’s national railways to haul light passenger and commuter trains on regional routes. Introduced from 1999, it was designed to replace aging classes such as the E.424 and E.646 and quickly became the most numerous locomotive type in use by FS Trenitalia and regional operators. Over 700 units were delivered, making it the most widespread Italian locomotive class ever produced.
The E.464 has a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and runs under standard 3 kV DC overhead electrification with a top speed of 160 km/h and a power output of around 3.5 MW. It features three-phase asynchronous traction motors and was among the first Italian locomotives fitted with automatic Scharfenberg couplers for rapid push-pull working with control cars.
The class was originally introduced for commuter and regional services in Italy, proving successful and leading to multiple orders throughout the early 2000s. In recent years some units have been used on longer Intercity services, especially in Sicily, replacing older locomotives on unelectrified sections and improving operational flexibility. Other operators such as Trenord and Ferrovie Emilia Romagna also use E.464 locomotives.
