Its name — PBKA — comes from the original major cities on its intended route: Paris, Brussels, Köln (Cologne) and Amsterdam. Seventeen trainsets were produced between 1995 and 1998 for Thalys, a consortium formed by the national railways of France (SNCF), Belgium (SNCB), the Netherlands (NS) and Germany (DB). After the 2023 merger of Thalys with Eurostar, the PBKA fleet continues in service under the unified operator. Each PBKA set is about 200 m long and comprises two power cars and eight passenger coaches, with seating for roughly 370-400 people in first and second class. As a quadri-current trainset, it can operate under four major European electrification systems — 25 kV AC, 15 kV AC, 3 kV DC and 1.5 kV DC — enabling seamless travel across the French, Belgian, Dutch and German high-speed networks without changing locomotives. In service it runs at up to 300 km/h on high-speed lines, making it a true European flagship of international rail.
